Verizon has an app that allows you to control their FIOS DVR via a WIFI connection. It also does things like silence the TV (or maybe pause?) when a call comes in. I tried it quickly but couldn't get it to connect to the DVR. More important to me was another app that allows me to program the DVR when I'm not at home.
Of course none of this does you any good if you're not a FIOS customer.
Garage door openers are typically RF, I don't remember any phone having the right kind of additional radio to do that.
