My understanding is that the lighter the image on the phone, the less power is used by the phone. LCD displays are lit by white light, and colored pixels are actuated to change the color of that light at specific locations.
White pixels = no energy used to modify the already white light, which is always on when the monitor is on.
Colored pixels = more energy used to change the color of the white light to a different color.
Traditional CRT screens worked differently; they were naturally dark and energy was required to light specific parts of the screen. This is why
Blackle is a great idea if you are using a CRT monitor (except for the aesthetics), but a horrible idea in a world full of LCD displays.
In short - the whiter your LCD, the less power it will likely require to keep it that way.
