It seems that it makes a huge difference whether one has cellular signal or not. My Mogul never seems to get a satellite lock outside at my house, but once I drive into an area with strong signal it eventually finds the satellites.

This is what makes me laugh when people fear we "only" have AGPS. The "A" part means that the unit gets assistance from cellular towers in finding the locations of satellites. With the crappy miniature GPS antenna crammed into the phone's case along with all the other stuff in there, without help from the towers it might never find any satellites.

Once I get a satellite lock, the unit definitely does not need a cellular signal to obtain location information - there are enough cellular-free areas around here to make that clear. As I drive into and out of them, Google Maps is able to keep tracking even when it is unable to download maps.
