Just to clarify, do I need to have any other drivers than the ones in your sticky installed?

Also, at this point, I haven't even tried rooting my phone. I am only trying to use the update utility to load the recovery v2.0 that is in your first post. I have renamed it the same as the file that was in the binary folder, and it is the only file in there. File extensions are displayed and it has been extracted from the 7z file.

I tried unplugging for three seconds, but when I plug it back in, it won't recognize the usb devce and I get an error pop up from samsung pst that says "e - dll cannot open the usb serial port. code: 2"
Okay, this is what I would do if I were you, I would uninstall anything that says SAMSUNG in add/remove program, reboot your computer as needed.
When your computer comes up, put your phone into DOWNLOAD mode and install the drivers I provided in the sticky. If you're running Windows Vista or 7 make sure you kill WINDOWS DRIVER UPDATE install (Instuctions Here) then install Sprint Updater Utility and see if you're able to flash your phone then... I'd recommend (just for kicks) using a different USB port
