This is a problem that manifested itself after upgrading the phone to the stock Sprint Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM...
I never had issues with WM 6.1 except when I had installed an old version or S2U. You may want to try checking the Slide 2 Unlock site, and check if you have the most upto date version.
Since getting my new phone from Sprint I've had ZERO problems with my power button.
