sounds like the same issues I was having toward the end of my Touch.
you can try this, it worked for me then...

assuming your on Windows XP/Vista or 7

go into DEVICE MANAGER
first look for any item with a yellow triangle or red circle
-if it mentions something about a mobile adapter and its a yellow triangle right click and update drivers
-if it mentions something about a mobile adapter and its a red circle right click and click enable
if neither of these exist then find NETWORK ADAPTERS
find the MICROSOFT WINDOWS MOBILE ADAPTER
right click and update drivers
once completed successfully, unplug your phone, wait a couple seconds and plug it in again

Should work now...
