Isn't that one of the complaints people have with the droid? The keyboard? I've seen it in reviews. I think John from Droid Dog mentioned the small keyboard being an issue, plus the keys are flat, and don't offer much feedback. Talking to my cousin who bought one, doesn't like the keyboard. He always uses the onscreen, because the onscreen is actually a larger keyboard, due to the huge d-pad on the slide out. If he had it to do over, he would get the Eris. Also, in the "Droid Does" commercials, the onscreen keyboard was used more often than the slide out keyboard.

Also, there was no ad campaign for the Eris. Verizon did some generic advertising on their ads, but didn't mention what the phone could do. Marketing rules everything.
