2) No! In the case of bootloaders, newer is not necessarily better as far as hacked roms are concerned. Here's the download for the last AKU2 rom for Verizon (older bootloader OK):

3) As long as it's in bootloader mode, it makes no difference if you connect it earlier than step 5.
