Unhappy Google Maps without data connection

On many occasions I would like to be able to access and use my Google Maps when I do not have an active data connection (Yes, this is possible with WM 6.1). In WM 6.1 it was possible to look up locations that I had already viewed which were stored in the cache.

When Google Maps is run on Windows Mobile 6.1 and the "Network Unavailable - data connection required" error screen appears, you can press the "Cancel" softkey at the bottom of the screen, and continue to view the maps you have in your cache.

However I just upgraded to WM 6.5, and now the "Cancel" option no longer appears. There is just an X that closes the entire program.

Is there a way around the "Network Unavailable" screen in Windows Mobile 6.5 when there is no data connection???
Better yet, Is there a hack that would keep the error from popping up at all???

Please help.
