Just because you see the "Ev" indicator in the connection status area, this does not necessarily mean you have an Ev-DO data connection. According to Sprint's Getting Started Guide on page 17, or HTC's User Manual on page 13, the Ev indicator simply means Ev-DO is available. And if the signal strength indicator to the right of it shows at least a couple bars, it means you could make an Ev-DO connection IF your onboard modem AND the server's modem allow it. In my case the server would not allow it until a techie changed my account permissions on the server side.
