I'm pretty sure you could take it out.. and dye it with Rit Dye... I've done it on blackberry trackballs before.. and they feel like they have the same sort of material but im not sure..

just heat up some water(enough to steam but not boil)...
pour the rit dye ( i use liquid) into a ziploc bag..
put the ball in the zip lock bag.. close the zip lock bag trying to get out extra air..
dip the ziplock bag (containing rit dye and trackball) into the hot water..
agitate the bag.. i just kept dipping the bag in and out of the water.. keeping the majority of the bag in the water the whole time..
dont do it too long or ball will get very dark..
when ur done just take the ball out rinse with cold water and rub off excess dye...

sure there may be an easier method.. this is jsut how i used to do blackberry trackballs a long time ago...
From what I have read, you cannot remove the track ball on the hero from its housing.
