You should edit the PST settings yourself as in Ryan Mogul's thread for WinMo phones. I did all of this on a Droid Eris (NO ROOT), and the phone works perfectly.
In other words, it's not necessarily about the right ROM. It's about editing the APN just right. It's not complicated, really. The DROID apn backed up .xml file can't be that much different than the Droid Eris, the solution for which I've already posted.
