My son has an HTC 6800 on Verizon without the data plan. Since he has WiFi available at work and home, it is not a big deal. He uses his phone to hold a database of customer preferences and contact info. He almost never uses data anyway.
He is in constant fear that it will break and have to be replaced with a "compatible device" that will require adding data.
Texting is a service that you are not required to pay for if you don't use it. Data should fall into the same category.

Lol! There's another person existing that agrees that this data plan shouldn't be required if you don't use it. We all like our Wi-Fi and it works better than the "3G" and serves our purposes well. AND of course doesn't cost us anymore than what we already pay through our normal course of home/work internet.
That's what happened to me, I cracked my Samsung i760 screen, researched out what phone I'd like to get next, came up with a Touch Pro & got the surprise you owe us $30 more per month for the privelage of using that phone you paid someone outright for.

Yes, I went from Samsung i730 launch date --> Samsung i760 launch date --> Touch Pro (Paid outright for from 3rd Party) --> PAGE PLUS CELLULAR --> Touch Pro 2. As soon as they tried to extort $30 more out of me I jumped ship since I had no contract for a long time.
Retentions didn't even give a crap. Basically pulled out their violin and said cry me a river if you know what I mean. I wasn't going to pay for the data plan. They added it for a couple of days while I researched and got my phone transfered to Page Plus! Best move I could have made. Thankfully the plan I got with them was 1/3rd the price I was paying with big red directly.
