Unlike WM, which allows you to exit the application by hitting "X", I, for the life of me, can't figure how to exit an application under Android.

Android is pretty good about managing memory. It will run the app in the background until it needs the memory and then it will close it. If you want to exit it completely, you can try the menu key and see if it has a quit or exit, otherwise use the task manager regularly. There are many configurable options on the task kill on setting up stuff to ignore etc.
