WEP keys are VERY easy to crack.
I imagine people are using WEP because they have old bridges/xboxes/tivos/etc that don't speak WPA, and they don't want to leave their Wifi completely open. It's the same thing as me locking the French doors at the front of my house when I go out -- if someone wants to get in, it won't stop them, but it at least keeps the honest people honest. (It does me, anyway -- if I'm out and about, and see an open wifi network, I will jump on it if I need to access something. But, as wide open as WEP is, I'm not going to hack it, even knowing that I could without much effort.)

The first google result for 'WEP nexus one' has a good suggestion, though. Dump the WEP, and just use MAC address filtering.
