You are correct in that Google Checkout as well as the Marketplace are tied to the account used for first time configuration. Being set up this way is two fold. On one hand you have the situation you are in which sucks. On the other hand, once set up with a permanent account, this system allows you to back up your settings as well as protecting you from needing to repurchase.
