Mine only gets hot when actively using it.

Not sure but I think I've heard that while roaming your phone is using extra power looking for home network, but like I said that's just something I remember reading and may be completely false.

If I were you I would go into the start settings phone and set it to roam only when I was at work in roaming areas and see if it makes any difference at all.
