What they will do is this, right before they ship the new one out, they will perform an esn swap, which will deactivate the old one and place a "lost/stolen flag" on the esn of the old one. If you try to activate it, the sprint rep will say it has been flagged by sprint's fraud dept. they is only one way to get it able to be reactivated and that is through a "ESN Scrub" You will NEVER ever be able to use that old one anymore.
