Yep, despite the fact that you might be able to come across some software that can link into the blackberry enterprise server, it will will not allow you to participate in blackberry messenger because of the pin tied to the device.
I talked to all of my friends that were using it and got most of them to add other IM programs which lets me use Palringo and the likes to communicate with them.
