root access is not required to apply a custom kernel as stated in all the custom kernel threads.

what are you trying to achieve and why?
once you can decide what you want to do, it'll be much easier to find the correct directions.

all the benefits to a custom kernel are stated in all the custom kernel threads. it is less efficient for me to duplicate the answers already easily available to you by some simple searches and reading!
