Here is my list of must have free apps---

SportyPal - GPS based exercise program that tracks progress and keeps records of your workouts.

Flix - GPS enabled program that finds movie theaters in your area and it gets the movies playing along with descriptions, trailers, etc. Works in US, Canada and some of Europe

Swype - My new favorite keyboard!

Smart Phone Tracker - allows you set up a secret keyword to SMS to your phone and it secretly emails or texts the GPS location with a link to Google maps and/or takes a picture of the location that your pda is currently in. (I've had to use it one time to find my Diamond and it worked fantastic)

MToolbox - A suite of tools for fun or actual use. Contains a Water Level, Ruler, Light Sensor, shock sensor and angle meter.
