After several calls to Sprint customer service, including talking to supervisors, I was told that the contract is violated only when the changes "ADVERSELY" affect me. IN other words, I will have to wait for my first bill after 1/1/08 and then compare that with the previous bills. Then, only if there were any Sprint surcharges which resulted in an increase in the bill, was I eligible for getting my ETF waived.
Persistence led me to write to them, and here is the written response I got from Sprint ecare. Need help. As of now I do want to stay with Sprint, and just want to change to the SERO plan. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, esp if you could also PM me with the same....

Please allow me to explain once again. The change in contract term is effective from January 01,
2008. Thus, the change in charges due to these changes will reflect on the next invoice. Since
the changes will be effective from January 01, 2008, I request you to wait till you receive your
next invoice. If there is an increase in charges on next invoice, we will apply the credit and will
cancel the services without any early termination fee.
Thank you again for contacting us.
