For ringtones just place them in your My Documents/My Ringtones folder on your Touch. Then select it in the drop down menu under phone settings. Ringtones btw don't have to be wav format mp3 works as well.
As far as a dummies book there are a lot of threads on this forum that should help you, just use the search feature. Google is also a great way to find info on PPC's.
