The "solution" I've found is:
1) Install Quaint Reboot, so that when the problem occurs I can use Voice Command to "Start Reboot Now".
2) After reboot, immediately turn off Auto Adjust Backlight, power down, and power back up. I can then turn Auto Adjust Backlight back on.
The problem initially occurs after any one of several unexpected errors, but will continue to recur until Auto Adjust Backlight is toggled as described above.
