I came from a Touch Pro and most recently a Treo Pro to the Hero and for the most part I'm satisfied. Android Market is great, changing Roms at will without wiping everything is spectacular and the overall feel of the OS is very solid. That said, I do miss my SlingPlayer (a lot) and my video out. I used to be able to play my SlingBox (or surf the web) in my car and send it out to the radio's 7" screen for the kids.
As for tethering? Put on a custom rom like Fresh or TTG, they both have wireless tethering built in and it works great. I won't go back to WinMo.
