LEDs don't draw much power at all, so I seriously doubt you would see any gain in battery life by trying to turn it off. In fact, I would venture to guess that it would probably drain the battery a little more to actually run a program that kills the LED. I can understand if you wanted to turn it off because it is annoying/distracting, but I don't think battery life should be a factor, IMO.
