I tracked this to the memory card. I removed the card and it worked again. I've not had time to track it the the exact reason on the mem card, but i was about to just back up the data and wipe it.

Hmmm, I am fairly certain that Sprint's stock rom DOES NOT auto rotate on the Today/Home screen unless there has been a modification on the registry or an auto rotate/screen app has been installed. If yours is rotating , it has been modified or you are using a non stock rom .
