If you set your GSM to manual, then register on AT&T, then set the phone back to Automatic, does the problem still happen? I can't really try that here at work since theres really nowhere to walk around to.

I'm back...
I can get it to connect in manual mode, but never in automatic. I waited for it to connect in manual, then switched it back to automatic, and it stayed connected. (I never had it connect on the automatic setting before, that must be what someone meant by 'tricking' it).
Anyway, walking about the house a bit made it lose it again. There is something a little different, though. Alway before (when set on Manual) it would just show up the icon for a dead signal on the top menu bar, but now it shows the three dots, thinking icon on the top bar.
