When I turn that setting off I have the cannot connect error. Hopefully you see this before hard resetting and it saves you some time.
The flashdance seemed to solve the problem. My 3g was already set to auto when I had the trouble. I could get a 3g data connection, I would just lose it after making a phone call, and could not get it back without a reset or turning airplane mode on/off.

So far I've had no issue with losing data after phone calls.
