AKUs are for Windows Mobile kinda like service packs are for Windows XP. They include bug fixes, patches, and functional improvements. Big difference is you can't download them directly from Microsoft - because the hardware and software are so closely coupled, MS releases the AKUs to the phone manufacturers who then decide whether to incorporate them into phone firmware updates. More often then not they don't.
