I had mine with VZW and they told me the same thing but it can be dont without. When I questioned why, they told me because of the data usage it uses and there is no way to stop it. So with them on the phone I went to me connection settings for #777 and told them all I had to do was remove the UID or Pass to stop the authenication process and they still tried to argue with me data would be charged. Keep in mind these are the same idiots who wanted to argue with me that when using WiFi it still goes through thier towers and data is charged! Some of them DO NOT need to work in Tech Supp.

Bottom line, it can be done, call and talk to someone else or someone higher and more knowledgable.
