Ok, another article on the MetroPCS block of non-mobile browsers got me thinking about the problem and now its solved: I kept installing the Opera Tweaks package after each flash. One of the things that package does is change the browser's ID and this apparently caused MetroPCS to refuse to feed it pages...IE was unaffected because I hadn't changed its browser ID.
In the end this had nothing to do with the NRG rom, and I'm (very) happily back to running it full time.
