I had settings under phone settings on my TP with energy rom to select hybrid , evdo or 1x modes. 1x would at least keep data throughput to a minimum if u did accidentally dial a connection , I'm sure its been cabbed up on here somewhere or maybe delete your connection in connection settings while your over seas
