Too bad you've chosen to use iTunes. This makes it hard to know what exactly is going on, where things are, etc. Apple's way of 'encouraging' you to use only their hardware. On the other hand, you could just move the music files to your phone's memory card and try some of the many available WinMo music player apps. The stock Windows Media Player is a piss poor music player. There are lots of good free players available, like PocketMusic, here:

Edit - I just checked out this link. Since your music is iTunes, your song files are probably AAC, and PocketMusic's AAC plugin is not free ($9.95). So maybe you would rather try a player lots of PPC Geeks have given high marks, namely Nitrogen. Here's the main thread:
