If you want some evidence backing up that Verizon has more than the best coverage, check out Consumer Reports report on Cell Carrier Coverage.

They cover 30 or 50 metropolitan areas (I can't remember which, and it's all of the major metro areas in the US), and Verizon wins for coverage, call reliability, call quality, and in other areas. I think the only area where they were regularly beat was in data access speeds.
