Okay, I realized what I did wrong.
I thought once I saw that bootloader mode the first time during the flash that everything was done. But, it turned out there was a new grey screen with a progress bar (obviously the flash).
The first time I did this, I pretty much did what you shouldn't do... at the tri-colour screen, I was pressing buttons, pulling the usb cable and yanking the battery
I'm surprised I don't have a brick right now.
My recommendations for additions to install instructions:
