I was given to understand that the 160-character limit is a fundamental limitation of the text messaging protocol - after all, SMS stands for Short Messaging Service. Regardless of what you do on your phone, your network's servers will chop up longer SMS messages into 160-character packets, and that's how they will be delivered to you. Workarounds include MMS (virtually unlimited text length) and (for some) extended text messaging, which some networks and phones support.
