I ended up purchasing a Eye-Fi Pro which supports ad-hoc, and i've tested it. It works well.
You don't have to upload EVERY picture you take, you can choose to only upload basic and or RAW, and you can also choose to only upload pictures with the camera PROTECT flag set on it.
So, I shoot raw + basic in small res. Then the pictures I mark protect get uploaded fairly quickly (500k each) and I still have local copies of RAW.
On my D300 this allows me 200 shots on their 4GB card, assuming I don't delete any.
It uploads photos on my sprint htc tp2 at the rate of a few per minute. (60 to 90 KB/s)
