rom has been perfect till this. just hard resetted and will try this again. maybe an isolated incident.

Interesting. I had a friend who had similar issues. His phone would even randomly hard-reset and also do the "won't pass the bootup screen" thing.
I had him re-flash with the latest hardspl (there have been updates) and it seems to have fixed them (it's been a week).
Keep me posted though.
