lol I don't know why I didn't think of this before but you can defintely get a gps lock and have gps track your movements without a data connection if you use standalone gps. The thing is any mapping software will have to have a data connection in order to download maps and directions unless you can find and use an app that stores map data on your device. So that is why you have to have a data connection for apps like google maps or bing.
