Hmm...
Maybe he should run the original .40 unlocker and when it tries to reset hold down power & camera and push stylus in the reset hole to go directly into bootloader. Do that until he sees .40 coke. Then flash the shipped stock rom.
If he has 1.xx.xx radio now then he needs to flash a stock rom with a 1.xx.xx radio.
