you can always buy phones without upgrading but you would have to pay an arm and a leg for it. TP2 is a very capable phone if you are into that field android is a very fun fluid OS that's gaining momentum right now and Palm's webOS is very nice also.
I have all three Pre, TP2 and Hero.
Try playing with them at local sprint store to make your decision.
