Actually, that implies the 6700 IR port was
not very powerful - it was not powerful enough to have the receiver pick up the remote from the reflections off the walls and what-not; it had to see the source. Every true remote I've ever used works just fine off-bore because of that - the remote is powerful enough that the reflections off, say, the opposite wall can be read by the receiver.
Obviously, this won't work on some wall colors and materials.
Also, back in the day, it used to be that you could run an IR transfer across at least 6 feet of open space in a well-lit room; nowadays the devices have to be next to one another, almost touching.
