I think the screen is also on a timer, so if you're using a hands-free, the screen may still be going dark during a call.
So, what you're seeing is the screen timing out - what you want is for the screen to stay lit during a conversation. You can install In Call Tweaks to do this - the cab is linked in my Thread [in my sig].
It's also possible to try Touch Pro Tweaks [already cooked into the ROM]. Option 1.3 "Light Sensor" will disable the sensor during calls from darkening the screen. There's also 1.1 and 1.2 which will force the device to stay awake during calls.
Hope some of that helps more.
EDIT: I think the additional logic behind knocking the screen out during a call is battery saving potential. A long phone call can kill your battery...a long phone call with the backlight on is even worse.

I have 1.1 and 1.2 disabled as well as the "Light Sensor", still does this . . . strange. Maybe I need to try In Call Tweaks . . . I searched your thread, but couldn't find it . . .
Thanks for being patient with me!
Just did a google for it . . . found it. Thanks!
