I haven't noticed any lagging with SMS, but am using the 2.1 standard 12/4 build. EnergyROM_21877_HERMAN_04.Dec.2009_Standard

Softkeys can be changed through TouchPro Tweaks in START-TOOLS-TWEAKS. If you're using 2.1 Manila, I think you can change both right and left. In 2.5, I think you can only change left.
