catfishk: did you put your apn info into default.txt? Did it make any difference? (I guess it's hard to tell, since data won't work anyway with the proxy.) Having sprint (who use no username or password), I hadn't even thought about it.
I have no idea how to deal with the proxy server (find someone who's ported a Hero over to cricket, maybe? Is that even possible yet?), but you should be able to at least find out if your data connection is established. Not sure how much linux experience you have, so don't be offended, but give this a shot:
Bring up a terminal and type 'ifconfig' (without the quotes). It should list the networking interfaces (if = interface). There should be a 'lo' (local loopback) and 'ppp0' connection. If there is a ppp0 connection, and it has an ip address that looks real, that's a pretty good sign your connection is established.
