That sounds like what happens when you try to use your home ISP's smtp server from the phone which is on a different address block. Most ISPs lock down their smtp servers to keep them from becoming spam machines. Most, however, allow you to specify your username and password (usually the same as pop3) so you can use them from another connection. You might want to try that. It's in mail setup someplace.
