but I have no idea how to edit it to get either a green or light grey highlight

Edit: that didn't work ... I switched to Mighty theme, exported that reg, switched back to classic blue, then imported that reg w/shashimi but the dropdown highlight is still blue GRRRR!!!

I was thinking ... Mystery uses a green theme in his work. Maybe you could figure out a way to use it in your custom rom. I've attached the ext package that he uses. It has a tsk file inside.
