I have the same Sprint employee plan that you speak of. You should be able to do the ESN swap over the phone by calling Sprint. That is how I finally got the switch after some difficulty. I first tried to activate my Hero online unsuccessfully. I then tried to do it through a computer chat with a Sprint rep and they tried to pull the same stunt on me (tried to force a plan upgrade). I then tried by calling Sprint and had no issues activating (swapping ESNs). Hope this helps.
