There is a solution though, if you ported the number back to sprint using a different SSN ie a friend/family member, then there would be no problem. This is what i suggest when customers come in wanting to get off of their parrents plans and keep their numbers. You dont have to be the account holder to get the number ported in your name, just the account holder's permission. So if you wanted to take advantage of the sprint offer and keep your number thats what you could do.... not saying it would work for everyone's situation, but it would work for those few at least.
